The Lawhill Cheksafe Machine

The Lawhill Cheksafe is a fully automatic cheque book finishing system that cuts, stitches, and binds printed folios into finished cheque books in one seamless process.

The line

Four modules. One automated pass.

Each folio moves through the same four stations, in the same order, every time — which is what makes the output consistent book after book.

01

Guillotine Module

The folio is placed onto the infeed table and then passes through the guillotine station, where it is accurately cut into individual cheque booklets before moving on to the stitching section. This station is also where the operator loads new folio stock and sets the required cutting positions for each cheque book format. The cutting size and configuration can be adjusted directly through the HMI screen, allowing the machine to process 3-up, 4-up, or 5-up folios and cut them to the required finished size.

02

Stitching Module

Two independent wire-stitching heads secure each booklet along the spine as it moves automatically through the station, eliminating the need for manual handling. Adjusting for different booklet thicknesses takes only a few seconds by turning a fixed adjustment screw that controls the booklet height, with a clear indicator to help the operator set the required thickness accurately.

03

Binding Module

Heat-seal tape is applied around the spine in three stages — cut to length, applied to the top, then formed across the back and underside — neatly covering the stitches for a clean, finished spine.

The completed cheque book is pushed onto a shingle stack conveyor, where finished books gather neatly, ready for counting, banding or packing.

Control & diagnostics

Run by a PLC. Operated from a touchscreen.

Every function runs through a programmable logic controller (PLC), with the operator working from a 256-colour touchscreen mounted for easy access at the guillotine module.

  • Automatic & manual modes — run full production automatically, or step through stations manually for set-up and testing.
  • Saved book-style recipes — job set-ups, including cutting positions and tape length, are stored by name and recalled from a drop-down list.
  • Configurable modules — switch the stitcher or binder on or off for jobs that only need part of the process, such as finishing pre-stitched or pre-guillotined stock.
  • Live fault diagnostics — if a fault occurs anywhere in the system, the machine stops immediately and a fault line appears on screen; pressing it opens a dedicated screen explaining the fault and the corrective action.
  • Controlled run-out — a run-out function safely clears booklets already in progress through the line, with a full run-out mode to empty the system completely.
  • Job reporting — book counts can be pre-set and tracked per job for production reporting.

Automatic Mode

The Automatic Mode places the Cheksafe machine into its fully automated production sequence, allowing cheque booklets to move continuously through the cutting, stitching, tape-feeding, and binding stations with minimal operator intervention. This mode is used for normal production once the required booklet settings have been configured.

The screen also displays the actual temperatures of the three heaters within the binding unit, allowing the operator to monitor the heating system and confirm that the required operating temperatures have been reached before and during production.

Manual Mode

The Manual Mode allows the operator to control the machine’s main sections individually for setup, testing, maintenance, fault recovery, and the completion of booklets left inside the system after a stoppage. Eight function buttons provide separate control of the infeed, guillotine, outfeed, main track, two stitching units, tape feed, and binding unit.

Each button cycles its corresponding station independently. This enables the operator to advance folios through the cutting area, operate the guillotine and outfeed mechanisms, move individual booklets along the track, test the stitching heads, feed a preset length of binding tape, and cycle the complete binding unit when required.
